Notes
from the President
I was happily working away as Vice President
under the leadership of Liz Mard when her personal circumstances required
her to step down. She asked me to assume the duties of President and
with the knowledge of having an excellent, proactive board support
me I agreed. Gloria Thorne continues in her far-reaching role as Curator
and Hildi Grob has been elected our Vice President and appointed Program
Chair.
As President I have reiterated four commitments that guide our
work:
1) Cover the history of Sherman broadly from the 18th through
the 20th Centuries.
2) Continue our active involvement with the Sherman
School.
3) Team-up with other town organizations to carry out our activities.
4) Continue to promote Roger Sherman, our greatest historical asset.
To this end our very successful “Kids @ Cobbler Shop” summer program
continues, with double enrollment and a focus on mid-20th Century life
in Sherman. We are working again with the Naromi Land Trust and have
reached out to the Sherman Chamber Ensemble and many Sherman senior
citizens for support. Our music programs on the Cobbler Shop Field
continue, with a repeat Big Band concert and a Civil War family summer
concert by the Sherman Chamber Ensemble as part of the Sherman Library’s
One Book One Lake program commemorating the Civil War’s Sesquicentennial.
We have located and are in the process of getting the funding for
the acquisition of an outstanding collection of early shoemaker’s tools
to be used to outfit an operational Shoemaker’s Shop, and we have just
the place for it. Roger Sherman became America’s most famous colonial
shoemaker, as his life’s work advanced from farmer and shoemaker to
founding father and statesman.
I would be remiss (and possibly admonished)
if I didn’t acknowledge the great success of The Old Store Museum & Gift
Shop. The Old Store is a prime example of the type of highly effective
volunteer work that is done around here. There’s always room for more
volunteers, so give us a call we’d love to hear from you!
